
Glenn Matfin obtained his medical education in the UK (including MSc in Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Oxford) and USA (including National Institutes of Health (NIH), working with Pima American Indians). He has been a clinician-educator-researcher specializing in General Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology for over 30 years (including being a Senior Physician, Joslin Diabetes Centre, Harvard Medical School, USA; Medical Director and Clinical Professor of Medicine, WHO Collaborating Center for Diabetes, International Diabetes Center and Mayo Clinic, USA; and Consultant Physician and Honorary Professor of Medicine, Acute and General Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology, NHS and Peninsula Schools of Medicine, UK). He has made important contributions to diabetes research and translation in the UK, USA and internationally. This includes being an ongoing investigator in the landmark study in type 1 diabetes (DCCT/EDIC); Type 1 Diabetes Exchange Clinic Network; EMPA-REG outcome studies; and the LEADER studies. He has also published widely including editorial roles with the BMJ Education group, Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Therapeutic Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism (Founding Editor-in-Chief), and Journal of the Endocrine Society; as well as editing several major textbooks (e.g. Endocrine and Metabolic Medical Emergencies, published by the USA Endocrine Society, 2018; and Lecture Notes in Acute Medicine, Wiley, 2021). He is a keen and effective teacher (e.g. received Harvard Medical School Academy Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence in Tutoring Award in 2011, for his teaching on the medicine MD degree course).
