Norbert Nowotny

Norbert Nowotny is an Austrian-born virologist with a broad teaching and research interest and more than 30 years experience in all aspects of viral infectious diseases. He was educated at the University of Vienna and conducted his Ph.D. studies at the University of Vienna Medical School. He graduated to PhD sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae in January 1982. His research interests include virus infections at the environment / animal / human interface, emerging viral infections, viral zoonoses, and vector-borne virus infections. He established international reputation in the areas of West Nile virus, Usutu virus and Borna disease virus research. He authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications.

  • More than 35 years of teaching experience in virology and infectious diseases (general, molecular, applied, clinical, medical & veterinary) at all levels: undergraduate, postgraduate (MSc, DVM, PhD) and at various CMEs.
  • Supervision of a significant number of MSc, DVM and PhD theses.
  • External evaluator and examiner of Master’s, DVM and PhD theses as well as Habilitations at the University of Vienna, the Medical University of Vienna, the University of Salzburg, the University of Zurich, the Veterinary University of Hannover, the University of Porto, the University of South Bohemia, Budweis, Sultan Qaboos University College of Medicine as well as College of Agriculture, Muscat, and Kuwait University Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait.

Approx. 150 scientific lectures, including several invited keynote presentations at international virology conferences, such as the 14th International Congress of Virology (Istanbul 2008), the 4th European Congress of Virology (Como 2010), at several International Congresses of the European Society for Veterinary Virology (including the last one in Madrid 2012) and at the 17th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Virology (Prague 2014); more than 50 poster presentations.

Received several international and national grants including 4 European Commission grants, grants from the United Nations and industry grants, in total amounting to approx. 2,000,000 USD.
