Best Practices & Trends in Information Literacy

Information literacy is a set of abilities that enable individuals to find, retrieve, analyse, and use information. A strong information literacy program is crucial for university students as it assists in strengthening their understanding of available information resources (from the library and otherwise), but also assists them in building confidence in their academic studies. We will discuss conceptions of information literacy and its evolution over the years in order to frame its relevance and role in higher education at present. In this pre-conference workshop, we will lead participants in an interactive discussion of methods that may be used to identify and target user needs, online resources that may be used to facilitate instruction, and ideas and examples of how academic librarians can work in collaboration with university departments and programs to integrate librarian-led information literacy into curriculum. Current trends and standards in information literacy and library instruction will be identified and discussed based on student demographics (e.g. undergraduate, graduate, faculty and staff) and context (e.g. general education programs, major, ESL environments, etc.). The workshop will end with a group discussion of challenges and innovations based on case studies contributed by participants. At the end of this workshop, participants will know how to identify information literacy needs at their institutions, as well as, relevant tools and materials that may be used to facilitate information literacy instruction.
