Dr. Mousa was born in Syria and earned his MD from Aleppo University in 1993. He then moved to the UK to pursue residency training, where he completed basic surgical training in Sheffield and higher surgical training in general surgery in Manchester. Dr. Mousa’s training in the UK culminated in Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Before joining MBRU as an Associate Professor of Surgery, Dr. Hussam held the same rank in the Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, United Arab Emirates University. During his tenure, he served as the coordinator for both junior and senior surgery clerkships and co-directed the Clinical Sciences and Final Integrated Examination (FIE). Dr. Mousa is also an instructor for the Advanced Trauma Life Support course.
Since 2011, he has been practicing as a Consultant Surgeon at Al Ain and Tawam Hospitals, respectively. He has specialized expertise in thyroid cancer surgery, including advanced lateral neck dissection for metastatic thyroid cancer. His laparoscopic surgery experience includes Nissen fundoplication, cholecystectomy, bile duct exploration, abdominal wall hernias, and trauma surgery.
Dr. Hussam was also an active member of several committees, including those focused on curriculum reform for clinical pathways and adjunct promotion. His research interests include thyroid surgery, trauma surgery, and acute care surgery.
