
Dr. Essa Kazim is the Associate Professor of Surgery at the College of medicine, Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences. Having graduated medical school in 1974, Dr. Kazim completed his training in general surgery and urology and obtained a Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons. He has served in various clinical and administrative roles in the Ministry of Health and Dubai Health Authority (then the Department of Health and Medical Services, DOHMS). He brings extensive clinical, administrative and leadership experience spanning more than three decades. He is a Consultant Urologist and was Head of Urology Department until 2002 and is still in active clinical practice. During his clinical service, he introduced endourological surgery and started pediatric urology as a specialty with re-constructive urology as a focus, and initiated and developed laparoscopic urological surgery in Dubai.

Research Interests
Dr. Kazim has been actively involved in continuing medical education and is the founding editor of Emirates Medical Journal and Urology Editor of Cyber Medical College. He is a member of a number of international organisations, including the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), Royal Society of Medicine, London, Endourological Society, Asian Surgical Association, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Glasgow.
Clinical and Community Service
Dr. Kazim brings a rich administrative experience in the healthcare sector, and has served as Hospital Director, Medical Affairs, Dubai Hospital (2002-2005), Assistant Director General for Medical Affairs, Dubai Health Authority (2005-2009), and most recently Chief Executive Officer, Health Policy and Strategy Sector, Dubai Health Authority (2009-2010) wherein he supervised the formulation of the strategic plan for the health sector of Dubai. He was instrumental in Dubai healthcare reform, when DOHMS became the DHA, and he led the team to develop healthcare regulation for Dubai. He was also the Consultant Medical Advisor to Director General of Dubai Health Authority providing advice on organizational as well as patient care issues.
