The UAE is on a mission to transform its economy into a model where growth is driven by knowledge and innovation. Innovation, research, science and technology will form the pillars of this new knowledge-based, highly productive and competitive economy. The recently launched National Advanced Sciences Agenda 2031 has determined eight scientific objectives, one of which is tackling the UAE’s top health challenges, including cardio-metabolic diseases, cancer, mental disorders, and respiratory diseases. Reducing the impact of these diseases is a priority and academic institutions have been called upon to continue to explore fundamental scientific principles that feed into the scientific value chain with the aim of advancing healthcare in the UAE.
MBRU’s Institutional Review Board (MBRU-IRB) is responsible for reviewing, approving, and monitoring all research applications that involve human subjects and human samples/tissue/data at MBRU. The Board follows strict criteria to assess the ethical aspects of research projects in terms of their risk-benefit analysis, in order to determine whether or not a particular research project should proceed.
MBRU-IRB’s remit is to ensure protection of the rights and welfare of humans/tissue/data participating in a research study.
It is mandatory that all researchers seek the necessary approvals of the IRB prior to commencing any research in MBRU, including those considered to be exempt. The research cannot begin until such approval is obtained.
